Since the opening of the first prescription pharmacy in 1780, the Charleston Trident areas medical community has been writing history. The Charleston Trident region has more than 1,400 physicians and nine hospitals that provide the highest level of patient care in areas as diverse as neo-natal care and liver transplants. According to the Center for Business Research, the health care industry contributes significantly to the local economy, employing over 22,000 people throughout the Trident region.
The area's hospitals include: AMI East Cooper Community Hospital, Baker Hospital, Bon Secours-St. Francis Xavier Hospital, Charleston Memorial Hospital, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Roper Hospital, Trident Regional Medical Center, U.S. Naval Hospital and Veterans Administration Medical Center. These nine institutions provide over 2,600 beds and employ more than 22,000 people.
The focal point of the health care industry is located in an eight block area of downtown Charleston. This medical hub is comprised of four full service hospitals and the Medical University of South Carolina campus and Hospital. The Medical University' s clinicians provide advanced medical services to more than 250,000 patients each year. The university employs nearly 8,000 people and has an annual budget exceeding $550 million with a total impact on the Trident area's economy of $1 billion annually.
Its six colleges educate more than 2,200 physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists and other health specialists. The Medical University, as well as several other local hospitals, provide wellness, health and fitness programs.
The Charleston Trident region has excellent psychiatric and drug treatment facilities, including Charter Hospital and Fenwick Hall. In addition, there are a host of nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities such as Charles Webb Rehabilitation Service.
Other specialties available in the Trident area include the Storm Memorial Eye Institute, the MUSC Burn Center, the MUSC Medicine and Rehabilitation Center, the Hollings Oncology Center, the MUSC Children's Hospital, the MUSC Family Medical Center and the Ronald McDonald House.
The medical community is served by MEDUCARE, a helicopter transport service which extends across a 200 mile radius, delivering patients to the region's hospitals within 35 minutes.
